Women’s Tennis Kicks Off Fall Action Friday

DURHAM- The Duke women’s tennis team took the courts on Friday for the first time this fall as all nine Blue Devils saw action in the Debbie Southern Fall Classic and the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The Blue Devils will resume action on Saturday.

Debbie Southern Fall Classic (Furman, SC)

Two of the three doubles teams won two matches to advance to the flight championships on Saturday at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic. The duo of Cameron Morra and Chloe Beck defeated Shelly Bereznyak/Kathleen Jones, 8-5, and then totaled a tight, 8-7 (7-4), win against Ava Hraster/Kylie Bilchev of Georgia Tech. Duke’s Emma Jackson and Brianna Shvets also collected a pair of victories on Friday. The Blue Devils defeated Dharani Niroshan/Emily Surcey of Mississippi State, 8-1, and then totaled an 8-2 win over Madeline Atway/Dani Schoenly of Ohio State.

In singles action, Shvets collected a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alessia Tagliente of Mississippi State, while freshman Katie Codd looked solid in her Duke debut winning 6-2, 6-0 over Whitley Pate of Wake Forest.

Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Milwaukee, Wis.)

The Blue Devils opened play in Milwaukee, Wisc., in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic with Georgia Drummy and Ellie Coleman notching a 6-4 double win over Liz Norman and Kennedy Gibbs of Purdue. Coleman continued her winning ways in singles totaling a straight-set win, 6-0, 6-0, over Emma Valletta of VCU to advance to the second round. Coleman then dropped a close match, 4-6, 6-2, 0-1 (7) to 85th-ranked Naomi Cheong of Southern California.

Drummy was trailing Miska Kadleckova, 6-5, when she was forced to retire in singles.
