PFT’s 2022 Week 3 NFL Picks

Last week was not good for us. Was it great for anyone picking games?

Strange results dotted the list of 16 contests. A 3-0 run in the final prime-time games took me to .500, at 8-8. MDS finished 7-9.

For the year, I’m 17-14-1. MDS is 14-17-1.

This week, we’re once again at odds over five games. For all the choices, scroll down.

Steelers (+4.5) at Browns

MDS Tasks: The Steelers’ defense is missing TJ Watt, and their offense just isn’t very good. The Browns bounce back from last week’s shock loss with a solid home win.

The choice of MDS: Browns 24, Steelers 13.

Florio’s Tasks: Who has a players-only meeting after two games? The Browns, apparently. On a short week, it might be too much to expect the Browns to put behind them the missed opportunity against the Jets.

Florio’s choice: Steelers 20, Browns 14.

Texans (+3) at Bears

MDS Tasks: This Texans team looks better than I expected, while the Bears look like they don’t believe in Justin Fields and call games to avoid having to make him do much . I love upset Texans.

The choice of MDS: Texans 17, Bears 14.

Florio’s Tasks: The Bears gave the Packers more fight than expected, with a misleading final score. The Texans’ ability to tie the Colts looked much worse after the Colts got screwed over by the Jaguars.

Florio’s choice: Bears 17, Texans 13.

Raiders (-2) at Titans

MDS Tasks: The Titans are perhaps the biggest disappointment of this year, a No. 1 seed from last year that looks like a rebuilding team this year. The Raiders pick up their first win of the season.

The choice of MDS: Raiders 23, Titans 20.

Florio’s Tasks: How are the Raiders favored in this one? They lost a 20-point home lead. And while the Titans were blown Monday night, so were the Bills. In a 0-2 teams battle where one has a new diet and the other doesn’t, I’ll take whoever doesn’t.

Florio’s choice: Titans 24, Raiders 20.

Chiefs (-6.5) at Colts

MDS Tasks: The Colts are in shambles right now. I find it hard to see them even staying close to the Chiefs.

The choice of MDS: Chiefs 31, Colts 10.

Florio’s Tasks: The Chiefs once lost a huge lead in a playoff game at Indy. This will not happen again.

Florio’s choice: Chiefs 41, Colts 17.

Bills (-5.5) at Dolphins

MDS Tasks: The Bills have rolled the competition two weeks in a row, and they will continue against a Miami team that is also 2-0 but not in the same class as Buffalo.

The choice of MDS: Bills 28, Dolphins 17.

Florio’s Tasks: Buffalo’s defense should be better equipped to make a save or two from Miami’s offense than Miami’s defense will be from Buffalo’s offense.

Florio’s choice: Bills 38, Dolphins 31.

Lions (+6) at Vikings

MDS Tasks: The Lions offense is better than people think, but their secondary will struggle against Justin Jefferson and the Vikings will get a narrow victory.

The choice of MDS: Vikings 35, Lions 31.

Florio’s Tasks: It’s become a big, sneaky rivalry, with a pair of barnburners in 2021. The Vikings should be able to win at home. Whichever team wins, the final score should be close enough for the Lion to cover.

Florio’s choice: Vikings 27, Lions 24.

Ravens (-3) at Patriots

MDS Tasks: Lamar Jackson is playing some of his best football right now, and he’s going to a big game in New England.

The choice of MDS: Ravens 31, Patriots 20.

Florio’s Tasks: If Baltimore can get JK Dobbins back, the offense would get a major boost. Other than Lamar Jackson, no one is able to generate real rushing yards for the Ravens. Meanwhile, the New England offense continues to be a work in progress,

Florio’s choice: Ravens 24, Patriots 14.

Bengals (-4.5) at the Jets

MDS Tasks: After a tough first few weeks, the Bengals will finally step up on the board with a high-scoring victory against a Jets team with abysmal defense.

The choice of MDS: Bengals 38, Jets 27.

Florio’s Tasks: The Bengals despair. The fact that they were upset by the Jets last year will make it less likely that they will take the Jets lightly.

Florio’s choice: Bengals 31, Jets 24.

Eagles (-6.5) in Commanders

MDS Tasks: Jalen Hurts vs. Carson Wentz should be a fun game, and I love that Hurts makes the most of it and shows why the Eagles had the wisdom to make him their franchise quarterback.

The choice of MDS: Eagles 28, Commanders 20.

Florio’s Tasks: The Eagles look like a team of fate. It’s something commanders haven’t looked at in over 30 years.

Florio’s choice: Eagles 31, Commanders 17.

Saints (-3) at Panthers

MDS Tasks: The Panthers’ rebuild just hasn’t taken off under Matt Rhule, and there’s not enough time to turn things around.

The choice of MDS: Saints 17, Panthers 10.

Florio’s Tasks: If Matt Rhule doesn’t win this one, he might not make it to the end of the season. (He may not get there anyway.)

Florio’s choice: Panthers 23, Saints 20.

Jaguars (+7) at Chargers

MDS Tasks: The Jaguars played impressive football under new coach Doug Pederson, and a surprise here wouldn’t shock me, but I think they’ll just fall short against Justin Herbert and a good Chargers offense.

The choice of MDS: Chargers 28, Jaguars 27.

Florio’s Tasks: The Jags have the wind in their sails. They’re good enough to keep this one close, and maybe win it.

Florio’s choice: Chargers 24, Jaguars 20.

Rams (-3.5) to Cardinals

MDS Tasks: NFC West seems wide open right now, but in this big game, I love that the Rams are declaring they’re still the best team in the division.

The choice of MDS: Rams 30, Cardinals 17.

Florio’s Tasks: Kyler Murray looks like a different player when he has mobility and is given the go-ahead to use it. In the playoff game against the Rams, he was not healthy. He is now. #LeaveKylerCook.

Florio’s choice: Cardinals 30, Aries 23.

Falcons (+2) at Seahawks

MDS Tasks: I don’t have high hopes for the Seahawks this season, but I see them improving to 2-1 against an outclassed Falcons team.

The choice of MDS: Seahawks 24, Falcons 20.

Florio’s Tasks: Seattle may not be a great team, but they’re good enough to beat the Falcons at home. If not, Drew Lock time is coming.

Florio’s choice: Seahawks 17, Falcons 14.

Packers (+1.5) at Buccaneers

MDS Tasks: The Buccaneers defense has been excellent so far this season and will play well against Aaron Rodgers in what looks to be a close, low-scoring game.

The choice of MDS: Buccaneers 17, Packers 16.

Florio’s Tasks: The Bucs are moving towards a team that likes to run the ball and play defense. Whatever it takes to win. And that will be enough to win on Sunday.

Florio’s choice: Buccaneers 23, Packers 20.

49ers (-1.5) at the Broncos

MDS Tasks: Jimmy Garoppolo is better than Trey Lance, which means the 49ers have a better chance of winning in the short term, as unfortunate as Lance’s injury was for the 49ers’ long-term plans. They will win a tough fight against Russell Wilson and the Broncos.

The choice of MDS: 49ers 24, Broncos 20.

Florio’s Tasks: Something is wrong with this line. The Broncos are entangled in the mechanics of play calls. The 49ers have an elite roster. Now that the quarterback situation has been resolved, expect the 49ers to begin to thrive.

Florio’s choice: 49ers 34, Broncos 20.

Cowboys (+2.5) at Giants

MDS Tasks: Yes, the Giants are 2-0, but they’re about as unimpressive as a 2-0. Yes, the Cowboys are without Dak Prescott, but Cooper Rush has proven he can fill in adequately. I’m surprised the Giants are favored.

The choice of MDS: Cowboys 28, Giants 20.

Florio’s Tasks: Some teams 0-2 should win. Some 2-0 teams are expected to lose. The Giants must lose and the Cowboys under Cooper Rush can do enough to win.

Florio’s choice: Cowboys 21, Giants 17.
