Gut reactions to the Steelers’ 29-17 loss to the Browns

Instinctive reactions are immediate responses to a situation without taking the time to analyze the situation. It’s something we usually do as sports fans. Especially if you are a full Yinzer, or even just a part of Yinzer. As is the custom, I compile my instinctive thoughts and post them immediately after every Steelers game (my son Kyle might have a few things to say as well). This is my version of running my mouth first and apologizing later (or not). So, that being said, I’m going to use that philosophy here during Week 3 of the NFL regular season.

1st trimester

  • Steelers at kickoff. Bring more football.
  • The defense takes them to a third and 10. Will we see the soft zone early? We did, but Wallace made a great play to take him down.
  • You know it’s bad when Al Michaels calls the Steelers dink & dunk offense before they even start.
  • Third and fifth, the Steelers at least throw the ball downfield, but it falls incomplete and they’ll throw after a first down.
  • Highsmith jumps to the side of 3rd-and-6, now making it a third-and-one.
  • Lary O. with the bag on 3rd down.
  • Killebrew got part of that point and the Steelers will have a great field position to start their second possession.
  • Nice 10 yards from Najee.
  • A good run on first down was followed by two terrible passing plays. Boswell will try to put the Steelers on the board.
  • The wind seizes it and pushes it to 50 meters.
  • The defense quickly gets them on third down and nine. Looks like they could be just short. I expect them to get there quickly.
  • A QB sneak gets the Browns first.
  • Chubb gouges the defense on this run. Witherspoon hit the tackle near the line of scrimmage.
  • That touchdown pass to Cooper was way too easy for the defensive backs. The Steelers missed their opportunity to score, then turned around and allowed a touchdown.
  • Brown 7, Steelers 0.
  • Oh my God. What a take from Pickens.
  • The rushing offense was again the Steelers’ friend.
  • It’s the end of the first trimester. Browns 7, Steelers 0.

2nd trimester

  • Cleveland’s offside on the first play of the second quarter, but that doesn’t matter as Najee runs it for a touchdown. Steelers 7, Browns 7.
  • The Steelers were very lucky on this play as Cooper hit the sideline before catching the ball.
  • The defense had too many guys on the field and ended up having to burn a timeout. I hate burning timeouts for unnecessary reasons.
  • The defense gives up a third and a nine. It’s hard to say why they drop so many long 3rd party conversions down.
  • Witherspoon can’t cover Amari Cooper.
  • The Browns just seem to be moving the ball around at will right now.
  • Another throw and catch for a touchdown. The extra point hits the amount. Browns 13, Steelers 7.
  • Nice work from Trubisky avoiding a sack and routing the ball to Diontae.
  • Dionte then saves the ball after Jaylen Warren fumbles.
  • The Steelers are definitely running the ball better tonight.
  • Trubisky on the quarterback keeper runs for the touchdown. You can’t say the offensive line wasn’t blocking well on this series. Steelers 14, Browns 13.
  • It was a pretty poor tackle from the Steelers there.
  • The defense had them in another third and long.
  • The Steelers are holding them back, but Cleveland is taking the time and I think they’ll go 4th and 2nd.
  • The Browns converted and maintained their practice. Now wait, they asked for the game to be reviewed and it was determined that it wasn’t a trap. The Steelers take over.
  • After picking up a few yards, Trubisky then throws two balls out of bounds, away from the receivers. I think the Steelers wasted a point chance there.
  • It’s half. Steelers 14, Browns 13.

3rd trimester

  • Nice catch from Claypool to land a first down.
  • The Browns get caught with an extra guy on the field.
  • Was it Najee Harris or Edwin Moses there?
  • Great catch and run by Warren but there’s a flag on the play. They caught Chuks in the ineligible field. Take away the big gain.
  • The Steelers are able to bring it down to a manageable third. It would be really nice to convert this one.
  • The Steelers are not converting. Harvin on point.
  • Witherspoon still can’t cover Cooper.
  • The defense needs to stop trying to tackle Chubb high. His legs are too strong, you have to cut them off.
  • Cleveland goes there for 4th and 1st and converts easily. I really don’t feel like the defense played as well tonight as they did in the first two games.
  • The Browns are in the red zone, but the defense takes them to a third-and-10.
  • The defense holds and the Browns will attempt a field goal. It’s good. Browns 16, Steelers 14.
  • The Steelers get to third down fast and really need to convert to give the defense a break, but they throw it deep and it’s incomplete. I expect to see the defense get gassed in this game like they did in the last game.
  • End of the third quarter. Brown 16, Steelers 14.

4th trimester

  • Cooper burns them again.
  • The defense can’t get Chubb down.
  • It’s a very tired defense.
  • The defense takes the 4th and the goal but Chubb hits it. Browns 23, Steelers 14.
  • The Steelers lost two points. If three of them leave and get out of here, I’ll die.
  • What do you know they face a third and 10.
  • Check that if a false start will make it third and 15.
  • Incomplete pass and the Steelers go three and out. They are dismal third down conversion rate continues. It will probably be the ball game.
  • Highsmith looks a bit like TJ Watt on this piece.
  • The defense holds, so the offense will get another hit.
  • What do you know of the offense going three and over again. The Steelers haven’t been able to generate any offense in the fourth quarter of the last two games.
  • Highsmith comes home for the sack on 3rd down.
  • Muth finally gets his first catch of the match with less than 3 minutes left.
  • The practice stops and the Steelers will go for a basket to bring it to a possession. Browns 23, Steelers 17.
  • The Steelers line up for the onside kick, but end up with a penalty and Cleveland wins the ball. How appropriate.
  • The defense holds them on third down, but the Steelers will get the ball back with about 10 seconds left.
  • The defense can’t get saves when they have to and the offense can’t move the ball when they need to.
  • I have to say that I was quite disappointed with Steeler’s performance in the second half.
  • I guess it’s also appropriate that on the last play the Steelers play the side game, turn it over, and the Browns score another touchdown.
  • Final score Browns 29, Steelers 17.

Well, my knees are getting tough. so I’m going to sit on it for almost a week, analyze it and then talk about it on The Scho Bro Show. CAN NOT WAIT !!!
