Women’s tennis split up to start 2022 fall campaign

MURFEESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee women’s tennis is splitting up and heading to two tournaments this weekend, Sept. 23-25, to kick off its 2022 fall schedule.

Three Blue Raiders will be heading north to the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. The tournament will consist of a singles and doubles draw.

The remainder of the Blue Raiders will be heading south to the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. The tournament format will be hidden duals. Doubles will start at 10 am with singles to follow.

The Blue Raiders welcome several new players to the program this fall. Camila Barragan, Rutuja Chaphalkar, Sana Garakani, Cara Szilasi and Karen Yibirin are the new names to look out for this year, as they play their first collegiate matches this weekend.

Along with the five freshmen, the Blue Raiders also return five players from last year’s squad. Four of the five upperclassman will be in action this weekend.


“I am looking forward to this weekend’s tournament, as we participate in two different events,” said Head Coach Tayo Bailey-Duvall. “Our upperclassmen are looking to build off of their improvements from last year. The freshmen are excited to experience their first collegiate matches. I expect there will be some nerves, but I am confident they will adjust well and push through. We have some quality teams to compete against and will give me a good idea of ​​our starting point and specific areas to focus on, as we look forward to the spring season.”

The Blue Raiders are back in action at home next weekend as they host the MTSU Invitational from Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Adams Tennis Complex.
