College football picks, predictions, odds: Texas-Iowa State, Oklahoma-Kansas among Week 7 best bets

Every week I use this space to tell you what I think are some of the best bets ahead of the weekend. I’ll also throw in an upset of the week, which will feature a team that’s at least a touchdown underdog that I pick to win outright. I’ll also give you picks on other games involving potential college football playoff teams. With plenty of CFP hopefuls remaining, I will go with teams ranked in the top 12 of the AP Top 25 poll.

Week 7 of the 2022 college football season brings plenty of excitement with three games between undefeated teams, two more contenders facing tough road tests, and one that is an underdog at home.

Last week was so close and yet so far. I made one pick but missed the other two by a combined 2.5 points. There are no moral victories here, so I’m aiming for 4-0 this week. Below are the picks for Week 7’s loaded action.

Week 7 Picks

Iowa State at No. 22 Texas

Featured game | Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa State Cyclones

It’s a trap game for Texas. The Longhorns need to make sure they don’t go too high after one of their most dominating wins in the history of their Oklahoma rivalry and don’t expect a big showdown with Oklahoma State next week. The state of Iowa is a grinder. Although Cyclones make things uncomfortable for your offense, they don’t have enough offense to steal the win. The ISU has lost three straight in the conference by a total of 11 points, but the Cyclones will stay close. Choose: State of Iowa +16

Minnesota at No. 24 Illinois

Featured game | Illinois Fighting Ilini vs. Minnesota Golden Gopher

Those teams include two of the top four running backs in the nation, Chase Brown of Illinois, and Mohamed Ibrahim of Minnesota, who returns from injury this week. They also feature two of the top six defenses on the ground. It sounds like a formula for a lot of points. In fact, we just saw this game last week when the Illini beat Iowa 9-6. It may be a little higher score, but not too much. Choose: under 38

San Jose State to Fresno State

Featured game | Fresno State Bulldogs vs. San Jose State Spartans

Fresno State hasn’t been the same since QB Jake Haener, Mountain West’s preseason Player of the Year, was injured in the Week 3 loss to USC. Replacement Logan Fife was unable to pick up the slack for losses to UConn and Boise State. Meanwhile, San Jose State is on a three-game winning streak, all by at least 17 points, and is now a conference favorite. Pick: San Jose State -8

Upset of the week

No. 19 Kansas to Oklahoma

Featured game | Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas Jayhawks

Did I miss a memo? Is it still the same Oklahoma team that averaged nearly 49 points per game in three conference games? I realize Kansas will likely be without QB Jalon Daniels, but Jason Bean did a pretty good job in his absence in last week’s 38-31 loss to TCU. There’s a very short list of conference teams Oklahoma might be preferred over at the moment, and Kansas isn’t one of them. Choose: Kansas +7.5, +235 ML
