Abilene High's Holland Wiggins returns a shot during the No. 1 doubles match against Wylie's Carly Bontke and Suhejla Qinami.  The Wylie team beat Wiggins and Taylor Nevitt 6-2, 6-0 on Oct. 4 at the Wylie courts.  Wylie won the match 17-2.

Abilene High turns away Amarillo Tascosa in tennis playoff opener

LUBBOCK – The Abilene High girls won six of nine matches to lead the Eagles to a 10-6 victory over Amarillo Tascosa in a Region I-5A bi-district playoff tennis match Tuesday at Monterey High School.

Holland Wiggins, Taylor Nevitt, Allie Dunn and Cynthia Grace Darby each won in girls singles, all in straight sets, while Darby and Nevitt pulled out a three-set victory at No. 2 girls doubles. Caelan Babarick and Zoe Barrett also won a three-set thriller at No. 3 girls doubles.

Liam Finley and Dunn won their mixed doubles match in straight sets for the Eagles, who ranked No. 17 in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association’s Class 5A state poll.

Noah Morris and Luke Padon won at Nos. 2 and 3 boys singles, and they teamed up to nab AHS’ lone win in boys doubles.

“I knew it was going to be a dogfight, and these kids rose to the occasion,” AHS coach Stacy Bryan said.

Babarick and Barrett’s win at No. 3 girls doubles snapped a 3-3 tie. AHS was up 9-6, when Darby ended the match with her win.
