Damon Benning new analyst on Nebraska football radio broadcasts

Sam McKewon recaps the Nebraska football press conference leading up to their game against Purdue this weekend.

Damon Benning, who helped Nebraska win two national titles in the 90s and is a prominent voice in local sports media, will be the next football analyst on Husker Sports Radio broadcasts.

Play-by-play announcer Greg Sharpe broke the news Tuesday night on “Sports Nightly.” Benning replaces 19-year-old veteran Matt Davison, who left NU Athletics to start a new collective NIL.

“I love Nebraska,” Benning said, adding that the school was close to family after family. “Whenever you get the chance to represent the alma mater, the ‘N’ on the helmet, there are so many people I’m proud to be able to work with.”

He will start on Saturday at Purdue.

Benning said he grew up going to Husker games with his father, the late Don Benning, a longtime educator and coach at what is now the UNO. Damon was an all-state football and baseball player in Omaha Northwest and part of the famous NU football recruiting class of 1992. He rushed for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns into a star-studded Husker backfield and captained the 1996 team. Benning considers former coach Tom Osborne and his former running backs coach, Frank Solich, among his key mentors.

“Coach Solich, just the reverence I have for him – it was a lot of tough love, but I knew he loved,” Benning said. “I knew he wanted the best for us as a unit…just the standard he set in terms of being competitive and how to attack life.”

Benning hosted several shows at 1620 The Zone before recently signing a deal with Hurrdat Media. He has also been an analyst on Big Ten Network, KETV and Nebraska Public Media.
