Why does Ohio State football coach Ryan Day wear black on game days?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day always wears a black shirt and black hat on game days due to superstition, but not necessarily his superstition.

Responding to a question from a listener on his weekly radio show on Thursday, Day said the style tenure began before he was officially head coach.

For his first two games as interim head coach in 2018 — wins over Oregon State and Rutgers — Day wore whatever was left in his locker. For Game 3, against TCU in Dallas, he decided to change his red hat and started walking on the court. Someone stopped him on the way and asked him what he was up to, and Day played the change of headgear like it was no big deal.

“They said, ‘No, no, you have to wear the black hat,'” Day said. “From there, it was over.”

Day said he later noticed the black hat was almost an homage to the one Woody Hayes wore during his 28 seasons as head coach. Hayes has won 205 games with his wardrobe pick.

“We’re going to try to keep this thing going,” Day said.

Among other topics on Thursday:

• What was Day’s off-week schedule like? Monday and Friday, staff were recruiting. Tuesday through Thursday were training days. Saturday is the only “off” day staff have from August until the end of the season. Day plans to spend time with his family but also expects “a lot of watching football”. The list of important games includes Penn State at Michigan.

• Day did not provide any specific injury updates during this rest week. He said the break would be good for the health of running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams. However, he also pointed out that “in consecutive weeks they both have to carry the load, which is good because I think it’s something they both want to do.”

• Although offensive line play has been “strong,” the next two opponents — Iowa and Penn State — will bring greater challenges.

• Day said ‘all three safeties are playing at a high level’. OSU was forced to play deep at cornerback out of necessity due to injuries. “We believe in these guys,” Day said of starters Denzel Burke and Cam Brown. He also reiterated OSU’s hope of bringing Jordan Hancock back from injury for the second half.
