Beavers picked 15th in NSIC; Mohamed Kone named Player to Watch

Oct. 13—BURNSVILLE — The Bemidji State men’s basketball team will have some ground to make up this season.

The Beavers were picked to finish 15th in the conference with Thursday’s release of the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, and they were slated to finish seventh in the North Division.

Despite surpassing only Minnesota Crookston in the poll, head coach Mike Boschee likes the makeup of his roster.

“I’m excited about the overall depth of this year’s team,” Boschee said in a press release. “We will be young but have multiple players at each position that could potentially make an impact this season.”

BSU will also lean on

fifth-year point guard Mohamed Kone,

who was named the team’s Player to Watch coming into the season. Last year, Kone averaged 11.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, the latter of which ranked second in the NSIC.

“Mo is a dynamic athlete at the guard spot who can impact the game in multiple ways,” Boschee said. “We are counting on him to continue to make strides as a playmaker in order for us to be successful.”

Bemidji State garnered 47 points in the preseason poll, which was one shy of Concordia-St. Paul’s 48. UMC finished with 17.

BSU had 14 points in the North Division poll, ahead of Minnesota Crookston’s seven points but behind 24 points for Minot State and St. Cloud State, who tied for fifth.

Minnesota Duluth topped the overall and the North Division polls, while Minnesota State Moorhead took second in each.

Austin Andrews of UMD was named the NSIC North Division Preseason Player of the Year after winning the North Division Player of the Year award at the end of last season. Upper Iowa’s Jake Hilmer was the NSIC South Division’s Preseason Player of the Year.

Twelve teams will advance to the NSIC Tournament, comprised of the top six teams in each division.
