Jackson and Brunswick stunned in first round of playoffs

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – Area state playoff opening night is over and what a night it was.

Two of the region’s top-ranked teams, Jackson in Region 1-2M and Brunswick in Class 6A Georgia, were stunned in their first-round matches on Friday night.

Due to Hurricane Nicole, five games involving teams from the region will be played on Saturday and another on Monday.

The Tigers enjoyed a massive turnaround under coach Christopher Foy but lost 20-13 to No. 8 seed Riverside in the biggest clash of the night. Tae’shaun Gelsey caught a fourth touchdown pass from Devin Herring, a play where he fended off numerous tackles, to give the Generals the deciding score.

Riverside’s win keeps the Generals’ late-season push going. First-year coach Antwan Nicholas saw his team endure a six-game losing streak, including a 6-2 loss to Jackson in the regular season, before turning things around down the stretch. Jackson was the only no. 1 seed in the state of losing its opener.

The Generals (5-6) will meet fifth-seeded Raines, a 34-22 winner over White, in the regional semifinals. Also at 1-2M, Bolles took a four-touchdown halftime lead and beat Episcopal, 38-6. The Bulldogs will face either Bishop Kenny or Bishop Moore in the regional semifinals.

Brunswick was the other top seed in the region to fall. The Pirates (10-1) had their second straight regular season unbeaten but saw fourth-seeded Houston County score on a two-point overtime conversion to stun Brunswick.

Bartram Trail fell in a 14-0 hole but roared to knock Flagler Palm Coast 50-20. The Bears (11-0) will host Creekside (9-2) in next week’s regional semifinal. The Knights went on the road and hammered Navarre 47-20, their first playoff victory since 2011.

Top-seeded Bradford (10-1) crushed Crescent City 48-0 in the 2-2S region and Baker County used the defense to nail Yulee, 16-6. In the 1-3S region, Columbia toppled Lincoln (29-6) and Middleburg’s season ended in a 42-18 loss to Escambia.
